This tree's story

Location of tree near to a pill box on footpath(25metres from road) along canal,possibly an original planting from Napoleonic times.Robust tree with open shape and 3 main branches some overhanging canal.Evidence of pollarding and some deadwood. Smaller branches on the ground-probably storm damage.

  • Insect boring
  • wasp nest?

Additional comments

Black buds on leaf stems.Large fungus attached to the trunk at ground level 1.6m wide and 0.6m deep.Also lichen growing on trunk 0.5 m from the ground. Hole in trunk may be an animal burrow. Large drop to canal and roots exposed to water. Estimated height of tree 18m.
