This tree's story
This Turkey oak is that last survivor of seven oaks which were planted around the VIne in Sevenoaks to commemorate the Coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. The other six were blown down by 100 mile per hour winds in the Great Storm of 16 October 1987 ( see first two attached photos, by kind permission of Keith Wade)The media coverage of the storm
mistook these trees for those which gave Sevenoaks its name, and dubbed the town ‘Oneoaks’ ! This episode certainly put Sevenoaks on the map.
Additional comments
The destroyed oaks have since been replanted.
